About

Jen Kosky Dance Theater is a New York City-based contemporary dance theater company under the direction of Jen Kosky.  The work aims to combine highly physical choreography with dramatic integrity and characterization.  The company’s work is largely inspired by the energetics of nature, urbanity, the body and interpersonal relationships.  Often portrayed with a fiery sensual point of view the movement style draws from release technique, improvisation, African dance forms and physical theater.  A collaboration between actors and dancers, the work aims to depict both abstract and literal stories that are human and relatable yet open to interpretation.   The company performs regularly and the work ranges from elegant and dramatic evening length pieces created with original instrumental scores and multimedia set installations to short upbeat vaudeville inspired skits set to Pop and R&B songs that allow room for comedic exploration and an ode to a variety of street dance forms.  Whatever length or esthetic quality the piece takes on, by creating a visceral environment to be inhabited by performers and audience members alike Jen Kosky Dance Theater provides an opportunity for an interactive artistic experience.  Jen’s main viewpoint for of her company’s artistic process is as follows:  “The body is a journey through which we discover our own unique stories.  When we agree to listen to our bodies, the work makes itself.”  The company members rehearse current works in progress twice a week and meet on an additional day for company class on a weekly basis.  Jen Kosky Dance Theater enjoys collaborating with artists of different genres including musicians, filmmakers, photographers and installation artists.  The company will soon begin offering classes that are open to the public and encourage cross collaboration between artists of variant disciplines.
